SAN DIEGO – June 7, 2022 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) and Aeronix, Inc. have been selected to build a secure connective network layer in space that will help realize the vision of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for joint force.
The companies will develop a Space End Crypto Unit (ECU) prototype that will connect Low Earth Orbit (LEO) platforms and weapons through a common architecture, providing additional network security for critical Space Force missions. Northrop Grumman’s prototype is a flexible, high-speed design based on a single-chip reprogrammable solution and is expected to deliver a connected network solution that helps fighters make decisions faster across a full range of platforms.
“Our prototype open-architecture spatial mesh network delivers new capabilities in spatial layer networking to meet emerging and evolving customer needs,” said Kevin Berkowitz, director of network solutions at Northrop Grumman. “This offering provides mission-speed data, communications connectivity, and cryptographic processing – a critical element for connecting the joint force.”
Northrop Grumman has worked with Aeronix to integrate high-speed encryption/decryption firmware, designed and tested to National Security Agency standards. By leveraging a Cryptographic Development Kit, Northrop Grumman has proven that third-party developers can contribute more to the already rich library of cryptographic algorithms. As part of this new price, this capability will be implemented on the Space ECU prototype for delivery in 2024.
As the DoD seeks to connect the joint force, Northrop Grumman’s networking capabilities play a vital role in providing secure global connectivity. Recent demonstrations of the radio terminal compatible with software-programmable open mission systems have successfully connected third-party industry vendors and securely shared information in a platform-independent multi-domain environment.
